I LOVED the quote by Elder Packer that is in the lesson so I put it on a poster also if you'd like to display it on the board:

Handouts:

3"x3" Handout - There are 6 to a page. These little handouts can be used in numerous ways.  They are the perfect size for the girls to use on their bulletin boards at home, taped in their locker at school, they can be collected throughout the year and made into a little book by punching holes in the corners and using a key ring to attach them each week.  If your YW use class journals or smash books, these are the perfect size to tape into their individual books.

If all or most of the girls have a smart phone in your class, here is another idea to use for this: text each girl this handout during the week to remind her of the lesson.  To do this, right click on the picture and save image to your computer.  Then email the picture to yourself.  Retrieve the email from your smartphone and save the image onto your phone.  You can now send the image in a text to your Young Women.  If you have a Facebook page for your Young Women, you could also post this to your Page!

Attention-Getting Activity:

Say to your class: "I have a treat here for each one of you.  Pass out the brownies but tell them not to eat them just yet. Explain that today we're talking about keeping our bodies healthy, so let's read the ingredients and make sure we're obeying the Word of Wisdom first.  (Write it down on a recipe card if you have one - make it look real!) Invite a Young Women to read the recipe to the rest of the class.

  • 4 oz unsweetened chocolate
  • 1 stick butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cow manure
  • 1 cup chocolate chips

Melt butter and chocolate in a large pan. Remove from heat and add sugar and vanilla. Stir in eggs, flour, cow manure and chocolate chips. Pour into a 9x13 pan sprayed with cooking spray. Bake in oven at 350 for 10 minutes.

(Wait for reaction.)  You can see that the secret ingredient in this special recipe is cow manure.  It won’t hurt you…it’s all natural and perfectly safe!  It’s just a little bit and one time certainly won’t hurt you.  All the good stuff will cover it up.

There are some things we would never put in our bodies, let alone pass our lips; but sometimes there are those who might think it is nothing to drink or smoke or take drugs just once…just a little won’t hurt…and yet these are far more harmful than eating a teaspoon of manure."  (Assure them that there is no manure in the brownies and they can eat them—that this was just an illustration of some of the excuses people use for breaking the Word of Wisdom.)

Ask the class what other excuses they've heard other's say about not following the Word of Wisdom. Do any of these excuses ever seem appealing or reasonable to you? Think in your mind - you don't need to share with the class - have you ever used these excuses in your life?

I really like the video in the lesson "Leave the Party." I think it shows a true life example of how trying drugs "just once" or even being at a party where there are alcohol and drugs can be harmful and affect the rest of your life. If you're going to show the video, this would be a good time to show it - after the object lesson and discussion.

Principles and Promises:

This talk, Principles and Promises by President Monson, is one of the last talks we heard him give. It is very short. I think it's important for us to wonder why President Monson would use these few precious moments that he has to teach us about the Word of Wisdom. The story in it is wonderful and makes a very good point - when we are following the commandments, we have the right to ask Heavenly Father to help us and bless us. This commandment and counsel is just as or more so important today than the day it was given.

Worksheet:

This worksheet goes along with the 2nd bullet point under "Learn Together" in the lesson.  Cut into 3 sections and give one to each group of girls.  Have them write down what they think their scripture says and then discuss together as a class.

Board Activity:

This board strip goes along with the 3rd bullet point in the lesson under "Learn Together". Hang in on the board and have the girls read the scripture in the lesson to find the answers.

The following board strips goes along with the last bullet point in the lesson under "Learn Together". You can use the images to display on the board as they discuss the counsel given. Encourage the girls to draw pictures along with these pictures of any other counsel they find. Then discuss the blessings that they found in their reading. Invite a girl to the board to write down or draw pictures to depict the blessings.
